About Mary Zayman
New York Psychotherapist
Following completion of my Masters in Social Work I treated children and their families at the Children's Aid Society in New York, where I gained firsthand knowledge of human development within the family and social systems. Conducting play therapy with children provided me with a wonderfully direct view into the mind and the life of the child. In play therapy it is the child’s play, in addition to their verbalizations, which the therapist uses to understand and help the child. The vividness and intensity with which the child makes known his or her struggles’ greatly touched me, and continues to inform my wish to be present and to enable the adult client tell their story, in their own way and time.
My work with the severe and chronic mentally ill at F.E.G.S., one of the oldest social service agencies in New York, similarly enriched my understanding of the gamut of psychological development and adaptation, as well as the impact of biology on human development. I believe that some degree of change and healing is possible for everyone. Despite coping with problems that few of us can even imagine, a person who must live with schizophrenia is able to increase their ability to cope with their problems and live a more satisfying life.
