Philosophy of Treatment
My background is both as a social worker and artist, having received my graduate degree in social work from Hunter College in New York in 1991, and my undergrad degree in fine art in 1983. There are many parallels between creating art and being an effective psychotherapist; I have found these two areas to be mutually enriching. Just as the artist needs to be in an open state in order to create and bring their vision to life, so too must a therapist be open to where the client is at, what they are feeling in any given moment, and, most importantly, what the client needs from you.
Sometimes a client expresses hopelessness. The therapist needs to constantly ask him or herself: “what response would be most helpful at this moment?” Maybe last week they just needed to be heard, but today they need my help to deepen their insight, and reframe a non-productive assumption. It is through the therapist’s practicing the art of openness and responsiveness to the client’s needs that the client begins to be less harsh towards themselves, and more able to deepen self awareness, which is always the first step towards positive change.
