What to Expect at your Initial Consultation

Come as you are

When you come for your first psychotherapy appointment, I will begin by taking some basic information from you. The next step of the process is to discuss what brings you to psychotherapy, what you would like to work on, and any goals that you have. A goal might be to improve a relationship, or it could be more encompassing, as, for example, to feel increased well-being. Many people don’t have a specific goal, and need help to explore what they want, and this is fine. There is no way to “do therapy wrong.”

While some clients come in and feel comfortable talking about themselves and their problems, other people feel hesitant, or don't know how to begin. Whether this is your first experience in psychotherapy or you have been in treatment before it is normal to feel some apprehension about beginning therapy. Many people who seek psychotherapy have always coped with their problems on their own and may feel uncomfortable about seeking help. Whatever you bring to the table in the first meeting is alright. A good psychotherapist should be responsive to and considerate of your feelings, so as to begin the process of earning your trust.
